SMITH, B. Bryan -- B. Bryan SMITH, 86, of Champaign, Ill., died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at home.

A private celebration of life service will be conducted at a later date. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy, Ill., is handling arrangements.

Mr. SMITH was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Des Moines, the son of Howard B. and Zella M. BRYAN SMITH. He married Joyce L. AHLSTROM. He later married Marilyn J. ORR.

Mr. SMITH was a self-employed master plumber and electrician until his 20s when he decided to become a funeral director. He graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago in 1952 and subsequently practiced in the industry for five years, owning two funeral homes. In 1957, he began to explore plastics and the products that could be made from plastic film. During the next 37 years, Mr. SMITH pioneered and developed plastic film products with several early patents. During that time, he developed proprietary manufacturing systems and plant operations that produced protective products. Mr. SMITH spent his recent years in semi-retirement continuing to design new and innovative products.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; his former wife, Joyce of Bloomington, Ill.; five children, William B. SMITH and wife Jane of Bloomington, Ill., Zelly B. SMITH and husband Donald SHIELDS of Bloomington, Ill., Dennis B. SMITH and wife Sandra of Champaign, Ill., Robert L. SMITH and wife Jennifer of Mahomet, Ill., and Ronald N. SMITH and wife Mary of Mahomet, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty KENNEL of Joliet, Ill., and Marie CALVETTI of Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.
