VAN NOSTRAND, Eleanor Ruth HAMIEL -- Eleanor Ruth HAMIEL VAN NOSTRAND, 83, of Cantril, died at 11:55 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Robert G. Farr officiating. A graveside service and interment will be at approxmiately 3 p.m. Monday in Leon Cemetery in Leon, with the Rev. J. R. Wheeler officiating.

Open visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday.

Memorials to Cantril Grass Roots Association may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 201 E. Hempstead Ave., Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. VAN NOSTRAND was born June 27, 1925, in Tipton, the daughter of Marion C. and Thelma E. DAVIS HAMIEL. She married Robert D. VAN NOSTRAND Sept. 12, 1947, in Tipton. He died Feb. 19, 1968.

Mrs. VAN NOSTRAND graduated from Tipton High School in 1943 and from University of Iowa in 1947. She also attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Northeast Missouri State University. She was a homemaker until her husband's death. She then began teaching in elementary classes and the resource room in the Van Buren Community School District from 1969-1988.

Mrs. VAN NOSTRAND was a member of PEO AD of Milton, Cantril Grass Roots Association, Cantril Improvement Corporation and Retired Teachers Association. She had served as Cantril city clerk and as a Cantril councilwoman.

She enjoyed reading, tending her flowers, playing the piano and bird watching.

Survivors include three sons, Bob VAN NOSTRAND and wife Linda of Fairfield, Bill VAN NOSTRAND and wife Terri of Vincent and Ted VAN NOSTRAND of Warsaw, Ind.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol HAMIEL BERRIER of Ankeny.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Norman and Keith HAMIEL.
