Fred was born in Batavia, N.Y., to Elwyn and Gertrude SPRAGUE. He graduated from the University of Buffalo Electronic Engineering Program, and he did his post graduate work at the University of Maryland.
In a career spanning 40 years, Fred's contributions ranged from designing, radar and missiles for the US Navy, satellite electronics and defense technology systems. He also helped design anti-pollution devices for automobiles and vision technology used for industrial quality control. He was a member of IEEE.
In 1993, Fred opened his own business in Fairfield, Phoenix MidWestern Resources, Inc., designing custom electronics for various commercial applications, specialing in hospital and nursing home patient mobility equipment.
In 1972 Fred married his college sweetheart Beverly. Never having children, they filled their years together with adventure. Their passion for extreme wilderness camping, and unique enjoyment of everyday experiences spawned exciting, and entertaining stores which friends have encouraged them to publish.
Fred enjoyed biking with his friends and completed several RAGBRAIs. He was a strong, athletic type and usually pedaled 1500-2000 miles per year. Other interests included canoeing, hiking and fishing.
On the serious side, Fred was active politically. He studied and lived by the principles of the Constitution being, also, deeply engrossed in history from Roman and Greek to Napoleon to the Revolutionary, Civil and WWII Wars.
A senior student of Qi Gong, Fred was also a teacher of TM.
Friends loved him for his quick wit, memorable "one liners," unquenchable sense of fun... and his warm, generous heart.
Fred, 63, died at home on Wednesday morning, March 4th; friends and family were at his bedside.
Surviving Fred are his wife Beverly (nee STEVENS) SPRAGUE, brother Frank SPRAGUE of Phoenix, AZ; twin sisters Janet FITZGERALD of Batavia, NY, and Judith RIGGIN of Waukegan, IL; along with numerous neices and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Liberal Catholic Church in Fairfield at 2 p.m, Sunday, March 8th.

A heartfelt Thank You to all of Fred's family, friends, doctors and nurses whose love and support nourished him though this difficult time.
