DUVALL, Charles L. -- Charles L. DUVALL, 88, of Bettendorf, formerly of Fairfield, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

A funeral was held at 1 p.m. today at First Christian Church in Davenport. Burial was in Clinton Lawn Cemetery in Clinton.

Memorials may be made to Bettendorf Lions Club, First Christian Church or Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mr. DUVALL was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Keosauqua, the son of Iska and Edith M. CARNEY DUVALL. He married Ella Mae LUDWIG Jan. 2, 1945, in Phoenix City, Ala. She died Jan. 26, 2005.

Mr. DUVALL was a 1939 graduate of Fairfield High School. He began his career with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Clinton in April 1946. He worked as a lineman and later as a construction foreman, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, he was employed as a courier for Metropolitan Medical Laboratory for 18 years.

During World War II, Mr. DUVALL served in the U.S. Army with the 71st Division, 3rd Army in the European Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946.

His memberships included First Christian Church of Davenport and Bettendorf Lions Club, where he served as president from 1978-1979 and was honored as the Lion of the Year in 1987.

He was a woodworker and enjoyed caring for his garden.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis DUVALL and wife Nancy of Davenport and Dale DUVALL; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary PEEBLER of Fort Madison; and one brother, Gary DUVALL of Idyllwild, Calif.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Bertie; and one brother, Louis.
