JOHN C. RUGGLES, Packwood. Born Mar. 21, 1832, Miami Co., Ohio. When he was about 7 years old his parents moved to Lee Co., Iowa, and a year later moved to Jefferson County near Richland. He was left an orphan at age 15 and being the oldest of seven children it devolved upon him to care for them. He and a sister plowed and planted while the younger children looked after the household affairs. He remained with the family until 1851 when he became infected with the gold fever.... Married Mrs. Martha A. BOWMAN in 1857. Parents of eight children, one dying in infancy. Living are Jesse O. of Hedrick; Amos H., Cyrus R., and Mrs. Nettie JOHNSON of Packwood; Charles W. and Mrs. James ROMACK of Linby; Silas Omar of Fayette, and a stepson, J. S. BOWMAN of Nodaway, Iowa....

PACKWOOD. Mr. J.C. RUGGLES died at his home n.w. of this place Sun. afternoon.... Leaves five sons and two daughters... Was laid by the side of his wife in Packwood Cemetery.

PACKWOOD. Sunday, Oct. 20 saw the passing of John C. RUGGLES, born in Miami County. Ohio, March 21, 1832. Parents came to Lee County in 1834 and later to Jefferson County near Richland, Iowa. He was left an orphan at age 15 and being the eldest child the care of the family fell upon him. In 1851 he became afflicted with the Gold Fever and crossed the plains to California with an ox team. The party walked over half the distance. Disappointed, returned to Iowa and in 1857 married Mrs. Martha A. BOWMAN. Mrs. RUGGLES died eleven years ago. They were the parents of eight children, one died in infancy. Those living are Jesse O. RUGGLES; Amos H., Charles W., Cyrus R., Silas Omar, and Mrs. Nettie JOHNSON and Jennie ROMACK; a stepson J. S. BOWMAN of Nodaway. Burial in Packwood Cemetery.
