James 'Jim' L. BARNES

James "Jim" L. BARNES, 77, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at Washington Care Center.

A graveside service, with military honors, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Cemetery in rural Brighton, with the Rev. Sally Graves and the Rev. Linda Foor officiating.

Open visitation is from 1-4 p.m. today at Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. The family will not be present.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Washington Care Center activity department, Brighton United Church or Alzheimer's research.

Mr. BARNES was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Fairfield, the son of Keith and Viola STOUT BARNES. He married Donna SMITH Aug. 14, 1955, at First Christian Church in Fairfield.

Mr. BARNES graduated from Brighton High School in 1949 and served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict from 1950-1954.

Mr. BARNES farmed in Washington County all his life.

He was a member of Brighton United Church and the Antique Car Club. He served on the board of the Washington County Pork Producers, and he was a 4-H leader.

He enjoyed farming, restoring Ford vehicles, fishing and nature.

Survivors include his wife of Brighton; one son, David BARNES of Washington; two daughters, Jo BARNES of Marion and Linda STEENHOEK and husband Larry of Prairie City, four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Ben BARNES of Iowa City.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
