WORLEY, Kenneth L. -- Kenneth L. WORLEY, 79, of Burlington, formerly of Fairfield, died Wednesday, Oct 1, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
A service was held Saturday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington. Interment was in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
Memorials may be made to PAW Animal Shelter, Des Moines County Humane Society or Great River Hospice House.
Mr. WORLEY was born Dec. 12, 1928, in Fairfield, the son of Clayton and Dorothy BELIEL WORLEY. He married Bonnie Jean GRIMES Dec. 5, 1958, in Elk Point, S.D.
Mr. WORLEY served in the United States Army-Air Corps for two years.
Mr. WORLEY worked construction all his life. He worked for Hardgrave Construction, Kenyon Construction, Kaiser Construction and Mower Construction on asphalt paving crews from 1949 to 1959, when he became a partner at Kenny's Asphalt Co. Inc. in Des Moines. In 1964, he went to Burlington for a couple jobs and stayed. He and his wife formed and operated Worley's Asphalt & Paving Co. In 1977, they opened Headlines Ltd. In 1993, Mr. WORLEY's health forced him to retire, and he and his wife sold Worley's Asphalt & Paving. In 1997, he went to work as a construction supervisor for CPI Inc. of Rock Island, Ill. He also worked part time for Hunt Road Storage & Grading running a trencher and backhoe for subdrain work and for Mike Nelson Concrete Paving Co. driving a dump truck. He also worked as a construction supervisor for the Highway 218 reconstruction in Keokuk.
Mr. WORLEY was a member of the Burlington Builders Club and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. He also worked with United Way.
He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, doing jigsaw puzzles and snowmobiling.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Debra WORLEY of Burlington and Shirlene GILBERT and husband Hugh of Indianola; two brothers, Lester WORLEY of Washington, Iowa, and Jim WORLEY of Iowa City; and one sister, Doris MINEART of Fairfield.
His parents and three brothers preceded him in death.
