GUSTAFSON, Lawrence Edwin -- Lawrence Edwin GUSTAFSON, 86, of Batavia, died Saturday evening, Oct. 4, 2008, at home.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery in Batavia.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa. Cards and memorials may be sent to 2677 Ash Ave., Eldon 52554.

Mr. GUSTAFSON was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Des Moines, the son of John Linus and Vera SMITH GUSTAFSON. He married Lorraine HIGDON, and they later divorced. He married Betty POPEJOY Aug. 22, 1977, in Fairfield. She preceded him in death Aug. 10, 2001.

Mr. GUSTAFSON served in the United States Navy Seabees during World War II.

He was employed at Iowa Malleable in Fairfield for 17 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, he farmed in Van Buren County.

Mr. GUSTAFSON attended First Christian Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include six children, John GUSTAFSON and wife LaVerne of Rugby, N.D., Linda COLLINS and husband Don of New Johnsonville, Tenn., Kathy PRASKI and husband Ben of Ackworth, James GUSTAFSON and wife Eunice of Waukee, Jerry GUSTAFSON and wife Georgia of Eldon and Joel GUSTAFSON and wife Teresa of Batavia; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma BAKER of Des Moines; one half sister, Doris ROBSHAW of Bondurant; and two brothers, Walter GUSTAFSON of Des Moines and Richard GUSTAFSON of Grinnell.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen; four half-sisters, Evelyn, Margaret HURDLEBRINK, Wanda CARROL and Alice FREEMAN; one brother, Robert GUSTAFSON; and one half brother, Albert GUSTAFSON.
