MADDEN, Evelyn MUDGE -- Evelyn MUDGE MADDEN, 88, of Keosauqua, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elsa Lawry officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery in Mount Sterling.

Open visitation began today at 2 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will be present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Keosauqua Public Library may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at 1408 Eighth St., Keosauqua 52565.

Mrs. MADDEN was born July 10, 1920, in Ottumwa, the daughter of George P. and Esther McELROY MUDGE. She married Max E. MADDEN July 29, 1942, in Ottumwa.

Mrs. MADDEN graduated with honors from Ottumwa High School and attanded Iowa Success School in Ottumwa. She worked as a bookkeeper in Ottumwa prior to her marriage. She and her husband lived for many years in Mount Sterling, where they operated Madden's General Store, first with his parents and then on their own. They sold the store in 1981 and moved to Keosauqua in 1986.

Mrs. MADDEN has belonged to both the Mount Sterling and Keosauqua United Methodist churches. She also was a member of United Methodist Women. She was a former member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to both the Thursday and Friday bridge clubs. She suffered a stroke Aug. 7 while playing with the Thursday club at Villages Cup and Cakes.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Daniel Floyd MADDEN and wife Kathryn of Cedar Rapids and John Max MADDEN and wife Janice of Des Moines; two granddaughters; and one sister, Martha ENGEL of Detroit, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and James MUDGE; and one sister, Eloise VanKLAVERN.
