KURTZ, Mary Jane -- Mary Jane KURTZ, 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

A Mass of Resurrection service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with the Rev. Paul Appel officiating. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service will start at 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established to St. James Church and M. L. McCreedy Home. Online condolences may be sent through the Internet at www.jonesfh.com.

Mrs. KURTZ was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Wellman, the daughter of Frank E. and Bessie CHALUPA BROWN. She married John N. KURTZ Feb. 3, 1940, in Washington, Iowa. He died in 1980.

Mrs. KURTZ graduated from Wellman High School. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She and her husband farmed west of Brighton for 33 years. She also worked at McCleery Cumming Co. Following retirement, she and her husband moved to Washington in 1973.

Mrs. KURTZ was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She enjoyed playing piano and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Dean KURTZ and wife Cheryl of Washington, Iowa; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maye Belle FOSS of Washington, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
