SLATER, Walter Eldon -- Walter Eldon SLATER, 80, of Ames, formerly of Keokuk, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Northcrest Retirement Community-Heartwood House.
A service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Service in Donnellson, with Steve Kemp officiating. Burial will be in Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. SLATER was born Dec. 8, 1927, the son of Walter Albert and Iva Margaretha (BALL) SLATER.
Mr. SLATER was a farmer and also had worked in maintenance.
He enjoyed reading Westerns, especially Louis L'Amour, and had a passion for John Deere tractors.
Survivors include his nephew, Randy BECKETT of Ames; a brother, Marvin SLATER of Keokuk; three sisters, Edythe BARNES of Keokuk, Garnett SWANSON of Burlington and Rosalee COGHLAN of Marion; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Vinton SLATER; and four sisters, Elberta LAND, Ruby FOLEY, Violet BECKETT and Ruth Ina ANDERSON.
