ADAM, Elmer M. -- Elmer M. ADAM, 84, of Fairfield, died this morning, Monday, June 9, 2008, at home.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Stephen Page officating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield with military honors.

Open visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Raymond Funeral Home and from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Mr. ADAM was born July 28, 1923, in Harper, the son Peter J. and Pearl SONDAG ADAM (sic). He married Harriet GREINER May 6, 1947, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa.

Mr. ADAM attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Harper. He started farming in 1947 in Washington County, then moved to Jefferson County in 1951. He farmed until retiring in 1988 and moving to 2265 Glasgow Road, Fairfield. He was an Archer Oil dealer for 50 years and a seed dealer for 40 years.

Mr. ADAM served in the military from 1943-1946 as a Navy Sea Bee as a machinist mate 2nd class.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and served on the finance committee and was an usher for many years. He served as chairman of the Cedar Township trustees for many years. He also served on the Jefferson County Federal Housing Administration Board and Jefferson County Board of Review for several years.

His hobbies were watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife; seven children, Dennis ADAM and wife Andra, Bonnie KESSEL and husband Mike, Robert ADAM and wife Nannette, James ADAM and wife Rebecca, Marvin Joseph ADAM and wife JoAnn, all of Fairfield, Charles ADAM and wife Susan of Longmont, Colo., and Janice McDONOUGH and husband Mike of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; four sisters, Edith WARWICK of Delta, Verda SIEREN of Keota, Verena SNAKENBURG of Sigourney and Oda REED of Fairfield; and one brother, Harry Joe ADAM of Columbus Junction.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild, his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
