SMITH, Cloyd C. -- Cloyd C. SMITH, 88, of Fairfield, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Following his wishes, his body will be cremated, and a private family inurnment will be scheduled at a later date.

Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army. Cards and memorials may be sent to 806 W. Briggs Ave., Fairfield 52556.

Mr. SMITH was born March 17, 1920, in Linby, the son of Leland and Blanche CRAIG SMITH. He married Mildred BATES Feb. 14, 1997, in Fairfield.

Mr. SMITH graduated from Packwood High School in 1937. He lived most of his life in Jefferson and Des Moines counties, previously residing in Burlington for 30 years where he was employed as a machinist by J.I. Case Inc.

Mr. SMITH was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Christine HAIFLEY of Omaha, Neb., and Shelly KERR of Keosauqua; and two stepsons, Randy BATES and wife Colleen of Fairfield and David WELLER of Keosauqua; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille CASS SMITH; his second wife, Anna Marie SMITH; and one brother, Lowell SMITH.
