SCHAEFER, Ethel M. -- Ethel M. SCHAEFER, 82, of Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant and formerly of rural Lockridge, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at the care center.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Dianne Brokken officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery in Rome, Iowa.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

SCHAEFER, Ethel Mae -- Ethel Mae SCHAEFER, 82, of Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant, formerly of rural Lockridge, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at the care center.

Mrs. SCHAEFER was born Nov. 19, 1926, in North English, the daughter of G. Lewis and Myrtle THOMPSON SCHWAB. She married Don THOMES in 1947. They later divorced. She married Max SCHAEFER in 1953. He died in 1976.
Mrs. SCHAEFER graduated from Kinross High School in Iowa. She then completed her normal training for teachers at Parsons College in Fairfield. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs SCHAEFER attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Central College in Pella, from which she received her bachelor's degree. Mrs. SCHAEFER taught in the country schools of White Oak and Round Prairie and in the schools of Rome and Wayland. She then took a position as a special education instructor in remedial reading with the Fairfield Community School District. She taught a total of 33 years before her retirement in the 1980s. She retired to live on her rural Lockridge farm until moving to Arbor Court about five years ago.
While teaching, Mrs. SCHEAFER was a member of the Iowa State Education Association.
She enjoyed baking, especially desserts of all kinds. She also collected hoot owl figurines and ornaments.
Survivors include one son, Dennis THOMES and wife Belinda of rural Lockridge, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband Don; and one sister, Gene KITCH.
