NORTON, Russell Loraine -- Russell Loraine NORTON, 89, of Pella, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, after nine days at Pella Hospice Comfort House.

A funeral will be held Monday at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Mr. NORTON was born Feb. 15, 1918, the son of Sherman and Blanch ESHELMAN NORTON in Clear Lake, Wis. He married Shirley STATLER April 11, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Mr. NORTON's family moved to Iowa, and he was educated at Mohawk Country School in Jefferson County.

Mr. NORTON was part of the 28th United States Naval Seabees during World War II from Sept. 18, 1942, through Dec. 20, 1945.

Mr. NORTON worked as a machine shop supervisor at Dexter Company in Fairfield. After 35 years, he retired from Dexter in 1981, and he and his wife moved to Pella to be closer to their daughter. He resided in Pella 26 years.

Mr. NORTON enjoyed boating and spending time near the river, gardening and flowers, time in his workshop, making broken things work, woodworking and making crafts that he sold at shows across the state.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Cheryl WESTRA and husband Steven of Pella; one granddaughter; and two sisters, Dorothy POHREN of Lockridge and Velma DERBY of Brighton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Viola NORTON; and six brothers, Arthur, Dale, Floyd, Harold, Raymond and Verle.
