OAKMAN, Roy Willis -- Roy Willis OAKMAN, 97, of 305C S. 30th St., died Friday morning, Jan. 11, 2008, at home.

A memorial service was held this morning at First Christian Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Suzanne Swahn officiating. Interment of ashes will be in Glade Cemetery in Blandinsville, Ill.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or to the Fairfield Public Library.

Arrangements are in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Mr. OAKMAN was born Sept. 18, 1910, in Hire township near Blandinsville, Ill., the son of Joseph Henry and Bertha BERGES OAKMAN. He married M. Elizabeth "Peggy" BURR April 8, 1933, in Macomb, Ill. She died Oct. 3, 2006.

Mr. OAKMAN attended rural schools in the Blandinsville area and graduated from Blandinsville High School in 1927. He and his wife farmed in Illinois and Iowa until Mr. OAKMAN retired at age 65, and they moved to Arkansas for two years before returning to Iowa. Mr. OAKMAN was employed in the maintenance department of the Fairfield Community School District or (sic) several years.

Mr. OAKMAN was a sports enthusiast, active in baseball, football, and softball when he was in high school and into his adult life. He was a 4-H Club leader in Van Buren County and a life member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a farmer and gardener. He was baptized at 19 and was a member of the Christian Church. He served as deacon and elder in three churches.

Survivors include three children, Lynda Ann UNKRICH and husband Dick of Fairfield, Ronald Max OAKMAN and wife Carolyn of Eagan, Minn., and Raymond Lee OAKMAN of Waconia, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Elma, Mary and Margaret; and two brothers, Carl and Harold.
