SOLOMON, Irwin -- Irwin SOLOMON, 86, of Fairfield, died Saturday, October 20, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral service will be at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, October 23 at Congregation Beth Shalom, 308 South B Street, Fairfield. Burial will follow at Ottumwa Jewish Cemetery.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, October 22 at Behner Funeral Home.

Mr. SOLOMON was born June 25, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Abe and Augusta SOLOMON. He grew up in New York City and attended New York University. On June 23, 1943 he married Gertrude (Trudy) WEISS in New York City. Irwin served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

In 1953, Mr. SOLOMON moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and worked as a supervisor in the electronics and aeronautics industries. Beginning in 1972, he was a sales representative for industrial products. After he retired in 2003, Irwin and Trudy moved to Fairfield, where he was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue.

While in Springfield, Irwin served as the president of the Springfield Veterans Association and as a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Veteran's Affairs. As a member of the Marine Corps League, he served as commandant of the Springfield Detachment, State Vice-Commandant for western Massachusetts, and as an aide to the national commandant.

Mr. SOLOMON was a very active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 32 in Springfield, and was Scoutmaster of the Council Troop to the 1973 and 1977 National Jamborees. He was a member of the executive board of the Pioneer Valley Council, where he also served as a District Chairman, Advancement Chairman and Leadership Training Chairman. Irwin was awarded the Scouter's Award, the Scouter's Key, the Shofar Award, and the Silver Beaver. He also holds the 3-Bead Wood Badge.

His hobbies were amateur radio, Boy Scout patch collecting, model railroading and birdwatching.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude, of Fairfield, brother Sanford Paul SOLOMON of Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter June SCHINDLER and husband Rich of Fairfield, son Alan SOLOMON and wife Sharon of Manhattan Beach, California, granddaughters Melinda and Suzannah SCHINDLER and grandson Adam SOLOMON.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Pioneer Valley Council BSA, 249 Exchange Street, Chicopee, MA 01013, Congregation Beth Shalom, 308 South B Street, Fairfield, or the Fairfield Public Library.
