DENNEY, Philip Edward Sr. -- Philip Edward DENNEY, Sr., 60, of Hickory, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at his residence.

Born on September 24, 1947 in Fairfield, Iowa, he was the son of Robert Edward DENNEY of Ellenboro, NC and the late Alma JONES DENNEY.

Mr. DENNEY had retired from Bell South after working with them for over thirty five years and was actively employed as Operations Manager at Guardian Security. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart award. He was active in the Boy Scouts and had served as a Sunday school teacher, and baseball coach. He also enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, gardening, and working with his hands.

Along with his father, he is survived by his wife, Sally RINEHEART DENNEY of the home, a son, Philip Edward DENNEY, Jr. and his wife Janet of Fort Mill, SC, two step-daughters: Lauren SWANSON and her husband Jamie of Bondurant, Iowa, Betsy LUCK and husband Kelly of Oskaloosa, Iowa; three step-grandsons: Spencer and Parker SWANSON of Bondurant, Iowa, Reid LUCK of Oskaloosa, Iowa; two brothers: Richard DENNEY of Salem, Iowa, Wesley DENNEY of Ellenboro, NC; two sisters: Shirley DENNEY of Burlington, Iowa, Diane PAYNE and husband Dwight of Youngsville, NC; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church, 237 2nd St., NW, Hickory, NC 28601, with the Rev. Dr. Wallace Johnson and the Rev. Deborah McEachran officiating. Burial will follow on Thursday at 2:00 PM in the cemetery at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 1302 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd., Mooresboro, NC 28114.

A memorial service will be planned in Fairfield at a later date.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, 334 2nd St., NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
