Richard Earl Mercer, 79, of Salisbury, Md., died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

A memorial service was held at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 132 E. Main St., Salisbury 21801. Online condolences may be sent via www.delmarvaobits.com.

Mr. Mercer was born in Packwood, the son of Samuel Edward and Iva Luellen Ramsey Mercer.

Mr. Mercer was a 1945 graduate from Packwood High School. He moved to Salisbury in 1959 to work as store manager for Giant Food. He later was vice president and general manager of Mardelva News Company for 30 years and retired in 1993. His retirement was spent golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Mr. Mercer was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a life-time member of the Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn J. Myers Mercer; two sons, Richard Mercer and wife Janet of Mardela Springs, Md., and Mike Mercer and wife Joanne of Salisbury; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Huddleston, Arlene Nelson and Jean Marshall, all of Iowa; and two brothers, Gerald Mercer of Iowa and Dale Mercer of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.
