Nellie B. Meacham, 96, of Richland died at 5:39 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at Washington County Hospital in Washington.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Richland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kim Gates and the Rev. Wilbur Morfitt officiating. Burial will be in Clay Cemetery east of Richland.

Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with family present from 6:30-8 p.m. Memorials have been established to The Richland United Methodist Church or area first responder organizations.

Mrs. Meacham was born March 25, 1909, near Birmingham, the daughter of H. Frank and Dollie A. Schwartz Hoffman. She married Laurence H. Meacham in Aug. 19, 1943, in Keosauqua. He died Aug. 8, 2000.

Mrs. Meacham grew up on a farm, attending Rainy Country School through third-grade and graduating from Birmingham High School in 1928. She attended Parsons College in Fairfield and became a teacher. Her earlier teaching years were in one-room country schools, including Clay Independent School east of Richland. She and her husband lived in Fairfield for about eight years before moving [to] Richland in 1953 where she helped her husband farm.

Survivors include one son, Charles “Chuck” Meacham and wife Kathy of Richland; three grandchildren; and one sister, Wilda Downey of Fairfield.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mildred and Blanche; and two brothers, Van and Bruce.
