HELLWEG, Donald Joseph -- Donald Joseph HELLWEG, 79, of West Point, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, with the Rev. Apo T. Mpanda officiating. Burial with full military rites by the West Point American Legion will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m., a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a wake service will be at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Donnellson Health Center or Lee County Hospice.
Mr. HELLWEG was born Aug. 16, 1928, in St. Paul, the son of Rudolph and Elizabeth UMTHUN HELLWEG. He married Mary "Jean" RAUENBUEHLER Aug. 8, 1953, in West Point. She preceded him in death.
Mr. HELLWEG was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He was a mechanic for 25 years at J.J. Nichting. He also delivered parts for West Point Auto, and he farmed.
He was a member of West Point American Legion and St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching western shows and maintaining his lawn.
Survivors include three sons, Rick HELLWEG and wife Deb, Larry HELLWEG and wife Rita and Marty HELLWEG and wife Janet, all of West Point; two daughters, Donna SIMONS and husband Terry of West Point and Lisa WHITTEMORE and husband Greg of Dallas City, Ill.; one son-in-law, Jay WILSON of Kahoka, Mo.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Arthur HELLWEG of Fairfield and Ronald HELLWEG of Fort Madison; and two sisters, Florence BROWN of Fort Madison and Erma MASSEY of Donnellson.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Dixie; one granddaughter; two brothers; and two sisters.
