FLEIG, Merrill Eugene -- Merrill Eugene FLEIG, 72, of Fairfield died Saturday, August 25, 2007 at his home.

Merrill was born May 5, 1935, in Stockport, the son of Leonard Franklin and LaRue Jane FISCHER FLEIG. He married Charlotte Mae BILLMAN on June 11, 1961 in Washington.

Merrill moved to Fairfield in 1942 with his parents. He attended Center #9 country school and was a member of the Fairfield High School class of 1954. He owned and lived most of his life on the family's Century Farm purchased by his maternal grandfather in 1894, besides spending his early childhood in Stockport, a year in Mesa, Arizona and the first two years of marriage in East Pleasant Plain.

He was a retired farmer. He also drove trucks for 43 years -- for Sam Dovico Jr. of Batavia, North American Van Lines of Ft. Wayne, IN, Bill Deutsch Livestock of Fairfield, Williams Brothers Pipeline of Tulsa, OK, owned his own freight and grain hauling business for 17 years, Bob Glass Texaco of Fairfield, Dickey Transport of Packwood, Wal-Mart of Bentonville, AR and HCM Plastics of Fairfield.

His hobbies include restoring and driving old trucks, cars and tractors. He was a member of the American Truck Historical Society and Heartland Chapter-ATHS. He enjoyed talking to other truckers at their meetings and national conventions. He also belonged to various car clubs over the years and collected toy cars and trucks. He participated in the Econofoods (now Hy-Vee) Coffee Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother William L. "Bill" FLEIG.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Charlotte, one daughter Cheryl L. KURNES and husband Doug of Pulaski, and two sons, National Guard SFC Marty F. FLEIG and wife Jeannie of Fairfield and Hattiesburg, MS (Marty returned to the U.S. from Iraq last Thursday after a year's deployment, also serving April 2003 - February 2004 in Iraq and Kuwait), and Michael L. FLEIG and wife Carla of Fairfield; six grandchildren David KURNES and Shelby McCARTY of Bloomfield, Michael KURNES and Crystal KURNES of Pulaski, John FLEIG, Leonard FLEIG and Marc FLEIG, all of Fairfield; three step-grandchildren Mary Peyton THOMPSON of Hattiesburg, MS, Chance HINTON and wife Brandi of Soso, MS and Tiffany JEFCOAT of Hattiesburg, MS, and one step-great granddaughter Mia Alynn JEFCOAT of Hattiesburg, MS; one brother Milburn D. FLEIG of Fairfield; his mother-in-law Iota JENSEN of Ollie; many nieces and nephews and cousins throughout the U.S. and Germany; neighbors, former co-workers and friends from Coast to Coast and in Canada, Australia and Sweden, all of whom he enjoyed visiting in his travels.

A memorial celebration of his life will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield with Pastor Danny Cary and Reverend Richard Iles of Waukon officiating. Lunch will be served at the V.F.W. Club, 121 East Broadway, following the memorial service.

Family burial of cremains will be at a later date.

Visitation with the family will be at 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa or to a fund benefiting his grandchildren's education. Memorials and cards can be sent to 1627 Highway 1, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.

Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
