Mrs. Emma DAVIES, Retired Business Woman, Succumbs

Mrs. Emma Anette DAVIES, 83, retired Fairfield businesswoman, passed away about 5:20 p.m. Sunday at her home, 309 E. Burlington street, after a short illness.

She had been in her usual health until late afternoon when she became suddenly ill. She passed away about an hour and a half later.

Last rites will be Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Presbyterian church with Dr. C. R. Douglass in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

The body is at the Omar Hoskins funeral home in Brighton, but will be returned to the family home Wednesday where relatives and friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. The body will be taken to the chruch (sic) at 1 p.m. on the day of the services.

Mrs. DAVIES had major real estate holdings during her lifetime. Many organizations and institutions benefited from her philanthropic work.

She and her late husband, J. T. DAVIES, were among the first persons in Fairfield and Jefferson county to enter the oil and gasoline business. They owned some of the first service stations in Fairfield.

One of the first was a gasoline pump along the curbing in front the building now occupied by the Mark Hoskins funeral home a half block west of the square on Burlington street.

Born Near Packwood

Emma Anette DAVIES, 88, was born on a farm near Packwood on Aug. 28, 1868, the daughter of the late Henry G. and Lydia A. THOMAS. She was reared and educated in the Packwood community. Her first husband passed away in 1901 after they had been engaged in business at Packwood, Hedrick and Ottumwa.

She was united in marriage a second time to J. T. DAVIES who passed away in 1921. Shortly after their marriage they came to Fairfield and were engaged in the furniture and undertaking business. Later they entered the oil business.

Even after the death of her husband and her own retirement, Mrs. DAVIES was very active looking after her real estate holdings. Many churches, schools and other institutions have benefitted from her gifts, and she has assisted several individuals in their new business ventures.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church, Chapter CPEO and the Eastern Star.

Mrs. DAVIES is survived by a nephew, V. E. THOMAS, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a great niece, Mrs. Erla THOMAS REYNOLDS now of St. Petersburg who at one time made her home with Mrs. DAVIES here in Fairfield; and another great niece, Mrs. Shirley THOMAS WILLIAMS, Winnipeg, Canada.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Bulk Of DAVIES Estate To Parsons, 2 Other Schools

Parsons college, Wheaton college of Wheaton, Ill., and Piney Woods, Miss., are the major beneficiaries in the will of the late Mrs. Emma A. DAVIES, Fairfield businesswoman.

Three-fifths of Mrs. DAVIES' estate, which includes substantial business and farm real estate in Fairfield and Jefferson county, will go to the three institutions. Each will receive a one-fifth share.

Mrs. DAVIES, 88, died Sunday at her home at 309 E. Burlington St. after a brief illness. Her will was filed this morning with the clerk of district court.

Under terms of the will, the remaining two-fifths of the estate will be divided among five other institutions. They ar the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield, the Children's Home of Council Bluffs, the Ottumwa Home Finding Association, the Salvaiton Army and the Methodist Church of Hedrick. Each will received two twenty-fifths of the estate.

Cash Gifts

Six relatives and friends were also named int he will for cash gifts totaling $10,000. They are:

Volney E. THOMAS, St. Petersburg, Fla., a nephew, $5,000.

Mrs. Erla THOMAS REYNOLDS, St. Petersburg, Fla., a niece, $1,000.

Mrs. May McCLURE, Galva, Ill., a cousin, $1,000.

Mrs. Lulu OLSON, Galva, Ill., a cousin, $1,000.

Truman Stansbery, Fairfield, a friend, $1,000.

Mrs. Maude Stanford, Fairfield, a friend, $1,000.

The wil named Scott Jordan, Fairfield attorney, trustee of the estate. It specified that all holdings must be liquidated within a 10-year period with all earnings during that time to be divided among the sharing institutions. Jordan said it was not possible to estimate the total value of the estate.

Mrs. DAVIES was born near Packwood and spent her life in this county. She and her husband, the late J. T. DAVIES, were among the first to enter the gasoline business in the county.

Mrs. DAVIES contineud to be active in business after her retirement. She made substantial gifts to many organizations and institutions during her lifetime.
