GOULD, Maurice R. -- Maurice R. GOULD, 95, of Richland, died at 7:20 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

GOULD, Maurice R. -- Maurice R. GOULD, 95, of Richland, died at 7:20 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Richland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kim Gates officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.

Visitation, with the family present, will be from 2-4 p.m. Thursday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland and again from 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m.

Memorials to the Maurice R. Gould Memorial Scholarship may be left at the funeral home or mailed to PO Box 293, Richland 52585.

Mr. GOULD was born July 29, 1912, in Birmingham, the son of Robert Samuel and Arminta STULL GOULD. He married Marjory WILLIAMS July 20, 1932, in Memphis, Mo.

Mr. GOULD grew up south of Birmingham and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1930. He earned his normal certificate at Parsons College in Fairfield and graduated from Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Embalming in St. Louis, Mo., in December 1937.

He taught country school near Birmingham for four years and worked at funeral homes in Donnellson and Fairfield. Mr. GOULD received his embalming and funeral directing licenses in 1938. He and his wife moved to Richland and purchased Allen Funeral Home in September 1940 and Hoskins Funeral Home in Brighton in 1958. They operated an ambulance service. Together, they also owned and operated a coin-operated laundry and a furniture store in Richland selling furniture, appliances and floor covering. He installed the floor covering and maintained appliances as necessary. He also enjoyed raising cattle until 1986. He sold the funeral homes to his son, but continued to help until last year. He had been in failing health.

Mr. GOULD was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the Iowa Funeral Directors Association for many years. He was active in community affairs, acting as city clerk for more than 34 years followed by 10 years on the city council. He was a member of the Richland Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a charter member of Richland Lions Club. He belonged to the Richland Masonic Lodge No. 38, A.F. & A.M., Richland Community Club and Richland United Methodist Church.

He participated in local Bridge, Canasta and Pitch card clubs.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, John GOULD and wife Valerie of San Jose, Calif., and Wayne GOULD and wife Lynne of Brighton; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth BEEBE of Issaquah, Wash., and Rachel HOLCOMB of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children; one daughter, Phylis SASSEEN; and one sister, Marjorie GOULD.
