HINKLE, Karl W. -- Karl W. HINKLE, 90, of Eugene, Ore., died from lymphoma Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006.

No memorial service was held. The body has been cremated.

Mr. HINKLE was born April 15, 1916, in Lockridge, the son of Ernest and Nettie ALLIMAN HINKLE. He married Mary Joanna PAYNE Nov. 4, 1942, in Santa Ana, Calif.

Mr. HINKLE attended elementary and high school in Washington, Iowa. He completed an English major and journalism minor in 1941 at University of Iowa in Iowa City. He later obtained a master's degree in mass communications from New York University.

Following his discharge from the U.S. Air Force, Mr. HINKLE worked in advertising and sales training media, then went into educational and documentary film production. In 1947 he produced an Academy Award-winning documentary for the United Nations called "First Steps." Mr. HINKLE later worked at the Reorientation Branch Motion Picture Section of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate's Office, at the U.S. Naval Rocket Test Station and at Lockheed Missiles and Space company. After completing teaching credentials at San Jose State College, he worked for and taught at multiple colleges.

Mr. HINKLE and his wife lived in Cottage Grove, Ore., for 11 years before moving to Eugene in 1989.

Mr. HINKLE was a member of Sensory Awareness Foundation and Institute of General Semantics.

He enjoyed poetry, gem and mineral collecting, photography and gardening.

Survivors include one sister, Phyllis June BAUM of Ottumwa and one brother, Ernest C. HINKLE of Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerome and Larry.
