ELDER, Mary V. – Mary V. ELDER of Birmingham died Tuesday evening, May 22, 2007, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.

ELDER, Mary V. – Mary V. ELDER, 95, of Birmingham, died Tuesday evening, May 22, 2007, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, with the Rev. Mike Renken officiating.

Open visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the shelter fund at Birmingham Central Park.

Mrs. ELDER was born Jan. 29, 1912, in Knoxville, the daughter of Thomas Stephen and Elsie ERMINE SMITH. She married Floyd McBRIDE in 1932; he died in 1961. She later married Lewis Fay ELDER in 1965 in Birmingham. He preceded her in death May 17, 1985.

Mrs. ELDER graduated from Attica High School in 1930 and received her bachelor’s degree in teaching from Parsons College. She taught in Van Buren and Jefferson counties’ schools and in Burlington. She lived in the Birmingham community for 30 years.

Mrs. ELDER was a member of Zion Methodist church in Pershing, Order of the Eastern Star in Stockport and county and state teachers’ associations.

Survivors include one son, Floyd Eugene “Bud” McBRIDE of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Jacque ROSS and husband Richard of Birmingham; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Dwight SMITH and Avery SMITH.
