Irene Elizabeth DOWNING, 84, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home and Crematory in Fairfield.

Irene Elizabeth DOWNING, 84, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary, or Arc of Jefferson and Nearby Counties. Cards and memorials may be sent to 1202 Glenview Circle, Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. DOWNING was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Birmingham, the daughter of Frederick and Sarah Elizabeth Crafton REIDEL. She married Orville “Lester” DOWNING Sept. 8, 1938, in Kahoka, Mo. He died Sept. 16, 1974.

Mrs. DOWNING’s childhood was spent in Bentonsport and Birmingham. She was employed at Universal Producing, Fairfield Laundry and Dry Cleaners, and Nelson’s Nursing Home.

She enjoyed spending time with family and participating in family activities.

Survivors include four children, Carolyn TALLEY of Fairfield, Janet BITNER and husband Harold of Syracuse, Ind., Victor DOWNING and wife Cleone of Wheatfield, Ind., and James DOWNING and wife Barbara of Fairfield; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl ANDERSON of Fairfield and Ruth EASTIN of Farmington.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings, Leo, Harold and Clarence RIEDEL, Hazel CASS, Helen HUFF, and Ethel PASTERNOCK.
