Dorothy Newell BILLINGS, 98, formerly of Birmingham died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, in Des Moines.

A memorial service was held Saturday in Des Moines at Illes Funeral Grandview Chapel. Entombment of the cremains will take place at a later date in Oceanside, Calif.

Memorials may be made to Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House.

Mrs. BILLINGS was born in Birmingham, the daughter of Victor F. and Mary Clark NEWELL. She was married George GIBBONS, who died in 1950. She then married Melvin BILLINGS IN 1963. He died in 1992.

Mrs. BILLINGS grew up in Van Buren County and graduated from Birmingham High School. She attended business college in Fort Madison and became a secretary at Westinghouse Corp. in Des Moines. In 1963, she moved to California with Mr. BILLINGS where she lived until 2003 when she moved to a care facility in Des Moines.

Mrs. BILLINGS was a member of Lake San Marcos Methodist Church in California. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Waveland Chapter in Des Moines.

Survivors include one step-daughter, Margaret Anderson of Des Moines; two step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Maynard NEWELL of Ottumwa and Kenneth NEWELL of Fairfield.
