Mon., Aug. 28, 2006, p. 8.Clifford Joseph WOLFE, 86, father of Dr. Brian WOLFE of Iola, Kan., died the evening of Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006 at the Masonic Home in Wichita, Kan.
He was a Friends (Quaker) minister for 55 years.
He was born Jan. 7, 1920 to Andrew Frederick WOLFE and Helen Whitacre WOLFE in Pleasant Plain, Iowa. A native of Jefferson County, Iowa, he grew up attending Pleasant Plain High School and Pleasant Plain Friends Meeting where his parents were active members.
After high school he worked on the family farm, helped work with his father as a carpenter in Fairfield, Iowa and attended college until World War II. He served during the war in three Civilian Public Services camps, designed for conscientious objectors to war during WWII, in Oregon, Iowa and New Jersey.
He received his formal education from Parsons College and William Penn College, with a bachelor’s in divinity from Augustana Lutheran Seminary and doctoral work at the University of Iowa School of Religion.
He was recorded as a Friends Minister by Iowa Yearly Meeting in 1948.
As a pastoral minister, he served congregations starting with Muscatine Friends Meeting in Bloomington, Iowa, and from there continued to West Branch, Iowa, Georgetown, Ill., Wabash, Ind., Pleasant Grove, Ill., Fountain City, Ind., Sugar Plains, Ind., and in North Carolina.
In 1985 he moved to Hominy, Okla., where he and his wife, Marjorie, served Hominy Friends Meeting among the Osage Indians.
He retired in 1990 from full-time ministry and moved to Wichita where they were active in University Friends Meeting.
Visitation ministry was his special gift and he carried this out faithfully until he was 85; serving on the visitation committee and visiting “older members” at University Friends in Wichita until he could no longer drive his car.
Other survivors include eldest son David and his wife Linda KUSSE-WOLFE, Martinsville, Va.; six grandchildren and three of their spouses and a brother-in-law, Harold HADLEY and his wife, Wilda, of Fairfield, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Hadley WOLFE and daughter-in-law, Barbara Somers WOLFE, both who died in 1999.
Services will be at Pleasant Plain Friends Meeting in Pleasant Plain, Iowa on Tuesday. A memorial service will be held at a later date at University Friends Church in Wichita.
