Rita E. JEFFREY, 85, of Keosauqua, died at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua.

A service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. The body will be cremated, and burial will be in Miller Chapel Cemetery, northeast of Keosauqua.

Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 3-4 p.m.

Memorials to the family may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at PO Box 513 in Keosauqua.

Mrs. JEFFREY was born Feb. 1, 1921, on a farm between Keosauqua and Stockport, the daughter of James W. and Lillie Warner SYFERT. She married Dean TOPPING, and they later divorced. She married Roscoe R. “Red” JEFFREY Dec. 18, 1948, in Mount Pleasant. He died June 1, 1996.

Mrs. JEFFREY had been a telephone operator in Keosauqua and cook at Birmingham School. She had lived in Birmingham, Fairfield and Keosauqua and resided at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center since June of 1991.

Survivors include, one son, Ned JEFFREY of Rochester, Minn.; one daughter, Teresa PHILLIPS of Norwalk, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rex SYFERT of Keosauqua and Harold SYFERT of Hillsboro; and three sisters, Kathryn BEER of Marion, Ruth STANSBERRY of Cedar Rapids and Mary BRADFIELD of Birmingham.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James TOPPING; and two brothers, Martin and Glen SYFERT.
