GEO. W. HINKLE

George W. HINKLE, son of David and Nancy DAY HINKLE, was born in Jackson county, Indiana, September 30, 1849, and departed this life May 13 1933, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 13 days. At the age of 4 years he came with his parents to Jefferson county, Iowa, where he resided until the fall of 1875 when he removed to Wayne county where he has since resided.

He graduated from the College of Physicians at Keokuk in 1875. For five years he practiced medicine in Warsaw, then located in Harvard. He there continued his active practice as long as he was able to travel country roads. After that he was always ready to care for those who came to him.

He enlisted in Company I, forty-fifth Iowa infantry when he was but 15 years old and served six months, being one of the youngest soldiers in the army at that time. He was commander of the G. A. R. post at Harvard until it became so small that they united with the G. A. R. at Corydon.

He was married to Melvina E. AXLINE September 30, 1879. To this union was born Eulalie who died in infancy and twin daughters Bessie and Jessie. His wife died in 1909 and Bessie in April, 1916. He had only one brother and one sister both of whom have preceded him in death.

His daughter Jessie has been his constant companion during his last years doing all that loving hands could do to make him happy and comfortable.

He served as representative for Wayne county during the 27 and 28th general assembly and was largely instrumental in getting the state to make the appropriation for the historical building.

He was a great reader and took a great interest in anything that would make his community and country a better place to live.

His going was very sudden as he had appeared to be in better health than usual.

They were preparing to start Monday on a trip to Ohio when he was called the Saturday before.
