Death of a Pioneer
Last Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, after a life of nearly eighty one years, Hercules A. Snook passed away, at his home in the southern part of the city.

Mr. Snook was one of the early settlers of Jefferson county and is the last of the two families of Snooks who located in this county in 1842, coming here from Ohio. The heads of the families were Casper and Peter Snook. Casper was the father of William, Peter G., and John; Peter was the father of Jacob, Peter Jr., Henry, Hercules A., Israel, and Joseph, all of whom are now dead. Of the younger generations there now remains in the county, Dr. C. Snook, son of John Snook; Miss Velma Snook and Mrs. J. C. Groff, daughters of John Snook; A. A. Snook, son of Hercules; Mrs. Wm. Hiatt, daughter of Hercules; and Ed Snook, son of Henry.

Hercules A. Snook was born in Tioga county, Pennsylvania, January 27th, 1818, and when sixteen years old moved with his parents to Richland county, Ohio. There on the tenth of March, 1840, he was married to Miss Jane Summers and two years later, on October 10th he arrived in this county. In September, 1859, he moved to Kansas and in the spring of 1862, while living at Lawrence, that state, his wife died. Shortly afterwards he returned to this county and was again married in November, 1862, to Ann Tuller, and since that time has always resided in Fairfield. He leaves a wife and three children living, --A. A. Snook, of this city; Mrs. Mary J. Brown, of Frankfurt, Indiana, both children of the first marriage; and Mrs. Wm. Hiatt, daughter by the second marriage.

Mr. Snook was stricken with paralysis about four years ago and since then his health has been very poor and part of the time he was almost helpless. His last illness was of little more than three weeks duration. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at four o'clock from the Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Rev. I. O. Kemble conducted the services.
