Mrs. Robt. R. RATCLIFF died Feb. 1st at her home on East Adams street after an illness extending over several years. Her death was due to paralysis, she having suffered an attack some years ago and another like stroke the week before she died.
Mrs. RATCLIFF's maiden name was Margaret Armstrong PANCOAST and she was born in Fayette Co., Ohio , August 6, 1830. She was twice married. In 1850 she became the wife of Dr. B. F . FREEMAN (sic. Benjamin F. FREEMAN) who was well known as a practicing physician in this county in the earlier days. He died in 1861 (sic. other sources use Feb. 25, 1860 for his DOD). October 20, 1863, she was married to Robert F. RATCLIFF, who, with one brother, I.W. PANCOAST of Des Moines, and four stepchildren survive her. The stepchildren are: W.H. and B.S. RATCLIFF of this city, Mrs. V.E. GILLETT of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Helen ROLLINS, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. and Mrs. RATCLIFF resided on a farm near this city for many years, and until old age compelled their retirement from it. They moved to Fairfield about three years ago and have since made their home here.
The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Thursday, Feb. 2nd, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. A.G. Grave. Mrs. RATCLIFF had long been a member of the Congregational church. The interment was in Evergreen cemetery (sic. actually buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery in Lot 199 E 1/2).
