KILLED BY THE CARS. John EVANS was killed by a west bound freight train on the C.B. & Q. Railway, about two and a half miles east of Batavia, Saturday about noon. His body was picked up by the trainmen and taken to Batavia. Coroner Hague was summoned and made an examination, but did not deem it necessary to hold an inquest...
John EVANS was born in Washington Co., Penn., and was seventy years of age. He leaves a wife in this city, to whom he was married in 1884, and a daughter by a former marriage, who lives in New Mexico. He came to this county in 1847, and has resided here almost continuously since that time. He was a soldier in the Civil War, a member of Company E, Second Iowa Infantry, and was with his regiment at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and in all its battles and marches. He was never known to falter at the most arduous duty and had a fine record as a soldier. The remains were interred in this city Monday, under the direction of George Strong Post, G.A.R..... the body was borne to the grave by six surviving members of Company E who reside in this city.
