DEATH OF J. G. BURKHART. John George BURKHART, one of the best and best known farmers and business men of Jefferson County, died at his home five miles west of Fairfield Saturday evening, after an illness of four years from a form of diabetes.
Mr. BURKHART was born in New York City in 1834, and grew to manhood in the Empire State. In 1857 he came to Iowa and entered the employ of the B. & M. Railway company which was then extending its lines west from Burlington. He retained this connection for 20 years, and much of this time he had charge of the construction of bridges for this company, a very responsible position and one whose duties he discharged faithfully and intelligently. During this time he resided in Burlington and Fairfield, but in 1879 he resigned his position and removed to a farm west of this city, where he passed the last years of his life.
In 1861 Mr. BURKHART was married to Rhoda M. BLACK, who survives him. Their family consists of four children -- W.G., B.F, J.E., and Anna M. BURKHART, all of whom reside in this county... Funeral services were held Monday, conducted by Rev. J. F. Magill, and the remains were interred in the City Cemetery.
