SERVICES FOR J. F. DEARDURFF HELD SUNDAY
Pioneer resident of Fairfield laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Weston Behner Funeral home for Jerry F. DEARDURFF, 89, who passed away Friday evening at the Jefferson county hospital. Rev. Hugh R. Brower was in charge of the services.

Several vocal selections were give by George McMican, accompanied at the piano by Marshall Barnes. Pallbearers were members of the Odd Fellows lodge, Charles O. Carter, Floyd McQuiston, J. A. Weygandt, W. G. Clark, E. H. Kyle and Charles Lynn. Grave services were conducted by members of the Masonic lodge. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. DEARDURFF was born December 9, 1852 (sic), in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Eli G. and Martha J. DEARDURFF. He came with his parents by boat to Keokuk, and then by hack to Fairfield, when he was still a baby. The roads were so bad on that journey that the elder DEARDURFF walked most of the way to Fairfield, and arrived here before the hack could make the trip. Mr. DEARDURFF told often with pride of attending the first state fair when he was about four years old. The fair grounds were located just back of the DEARDURFF home at 303 West Hempstead.

In 1878 Mr. DEARDURFF began working for the C. B. & Q. railroad in the building department, and remained there for seven years. During that time he was promoted to the post of superintendent of buildings of the east Iowa division. It was during that period that he helped with the construction of the old depot which is now used for the Church of the Nazarene.

For many years after this, he worked at the carpenter trade, until 1910, when he was elected city clerk. He served in that position for five years, during the period when Joseph Ricksher, E. A. Howard, Charles J. Fulton and Ralph Munro were mayors. It was during Howard's term of office that he helped to win for Fairfield its first paving. Mr. DEARDURFF also served on the city council from the second ward for eight years, and in all was connected with the city work for thirteen years.

On September 18, 1878, Mr. DEARDURRFF was united in marriage with Margaret G. SCOTT of Abingdon. They made their home at 303 West Hempstead, which has been Mr. DEARDURFF's home since his parents first moved to this city, with the exception of two years spent in Ottumwa, and seven years on a farm near Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

Mrs. Margaret DEARDURFF preceded her husband in death on March 27, 1933. Some time later, Mr. DEARDURFF was remarried to Ethel M. JONES. She survives him.
