Mr. Robert McCOID, father of our congressman-elect, died at the home of his daughter, in this city, Friday, in the 78th year of his age. While visiting friends in the east last month he was taken quite ill and was brought home to this city Wednesday night of last week. Everything possible was done to aid him, but all in vain, and ere many hours he slept the sleep that knows no waking. Mr. McCOID had been a resident of this city for many years, and was held in high esteem by his many friends. 'Tis but a few months since we recorded the death of Mrs. McCOID, and now, in the death of the father, the blow comes with more than double sadness on the family. Certainly misfortunes do not come singly.

The Bellefontaine, Ohio, "Examiner", referring to the death of Mr. Robt. McCOID, says: "Deceased was the brother of the late John McCOID of this place, and the father of Hon. M. A. McCOID, congressman-elect for the First Iowa District. He was born in Berkshire County, Penn., May 4th, 1800. When he was three years old his father emigrated from Pennsylvania, and settled in Muskingum County, Ohio. In 1832 the deceased came from Muskingum County into Logan, where he lived for twenty years prior to his removal to Jefferson County, Iowa, where he died.

Many of our older citizens will remember him as a friend, neighbor or acquaintance of the past, and pause on reading this announcement to reflect upon the goodness of his character. Like his brother John, he was a man of sterling natural sense, and a type of the early pioneer - honest, hospitable and unselfish. He was a representative of a generation of men who were hones (sic - heroes?), patriotic and conscientious - who could be trusted - and who were strangers to the deceits and corruptions, religious, social and political, which rule the day at present. As husband, father, friend and citizen he has left behind him an example worthy of emulation and respect.
