"Fairfield Ledger", Sept. 11, 1878, Pg. 3, Col. 8

DEATH OF MRS. JANE McCOID..... In Fairfield, Iowa, Friday night, September 6, 1878, after a lingering illness..... wife of Robert McCOID, aged 67 years and nine months.... She leaves a large family of children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren...

Her father, Guinton BAIN, was born in Scotland in 1749, and in 1767 came to America. He settled in Virginia, where he married Mary A. MONTGOMERY. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, in the Virginia troops under Washington, and died in 1806, in his fifty-seventh year. They had three children -- William, Mary and Jane.

The deceased saw her full share of life's disappointments, carried her full share of its sorrows. In early life she and her husband, Robert McCOID, went to Logan County, Ohio, and cleared and made a home in the wilderness. Amidst all the privations and struggles they raised a large family. In 1852 they moved to Jefferson County, Iowa. Just before 1857 they sold a large and valuable farm and went into business in Fairfield, and it was swept away in the crash of that year....

She endured the painful suspense of following, with the anguish of a fearful uncertainty, two sons through the war. Her look of mute and tearful grief at parting haunts the memory still and almost breaks the heart. She saw one return with an empty sleeve and broken health, soon to be the first to break the loved circle and be with God. Another, another and then another of her children went, until there was little chance for her to live with them, and her only hope was to join the increasing throng above.....

Mother, around thee gather now, in life's eternal constellation, Mary, John, Belleville, Robbie, and four infant spirits of glory, as together you wing your flight to those wondrous mansions.....
