David HAMPSON, better known as "Tim," died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Rachel HAMPSON, in this city yesterday morning about 9:30 o'clock from an overdose of morphine. Whether it was taken intentionally or accidenially (sic) is a matter of conjecture, the young man leaving no letters or papers which would throw any light on the matter. Deceased was 36 years of age and was born and grew to manhood in and near this city. He was of a roving disposition and little of his time had been spent here of late years, and he had also become addicted to the use of morphine and other stimulants. He returned home about a month ago, and during much of his stay had complained of illness, for which he generally sought relief in the dangerous drug. Monday night he came home about 11:30 and retired to bed immediately, shortly afterward arousing his sisters by his restlessness and telling them that he was sick. They were somewhat alarmed at his condition and about 1:30 were again aroused by his labored breathing. Entering his room they were unable to arouse him, and suspecting that he had taken an overdose of the poisonous drug they immediately dispatched a messenger for a physician. Drs. Campbell and Snook responded to the call, and though they tried a battery and all other means at their command were unable to arouse him to consciousness. A dram bottle of morphine was found in his valise, about half of which had been used, although those about him think he had taken only about one-fourth of the contents of the vial, enough to poison half a dozen men. They also say that this bottle had been in his possession ever since his return home, notwithstanding he had endeavored to purchase the drug at one or two places in the city the evening previous. The physicians think he must have taken the poison at or before the hour of his return home. Mrs. HAMPSON is now in Jersey City, having been called east not long ago by the illness and death of a sister. She was telegraphed immediately, and the remains will probably not be interred until her return home. She and her family have many friends in this city who will sympathize with them in their sorrow over the sad occurrence.
