Ill Long Time But His Death Is Shock To Community

Clyde POTTS, Mayor of Morristown for 24 years and internationally known as a consulting engineer on sewer and water projects, died at his home, 4 Farragut Place, yesterday afternoon after a long illness. His public career had included presidency of the State Board of Health and membership on the Morristown Board of Education. He had built sanitary and utility plants in Europe and South America as well as in all sections of this country.

The Morristown National Historical Park, the municipal ownership of the water department by the Town, the child hygeine nursing system in use here and throughout the state and Morristown High School football are but some of the living memorials to his life of service.

Born in Iowa 73 years ago, he had been a resident of Morristown for 43 years and an engineer with offices at 30 Church Street, New York City, for 46 years.

--Honored Twice Recently--
Ex-Mayor POTTS had been in poor health for some time and was unable to personally receive two recent honors, a plaque from the Chamber of Commerce given for outstanding services and awarded at its annual dinner and a similar trophy for outstanding citizenship from the B'Nai B'rith of Morris County. Both were accepted in his behalf by his son-in-law, John D. COLLINS. On Thursday, Mr. COLLINS, who had served as Alderman and later as Town Counsel while Mr. POTTS was mayor, was named special Assistant Attorney General of the State, to act as prosecutor of Morris County and the announcement made the former mayor very happy.

Yesterday afternoon as he sank into a coma and death neared, the Fire Department was called to supply oxygen.

By his first marriage he had two daughters, Jane Walker COLLINS and Elizabeth POTTS. Mrs. COLLINS, aided by her sister, has for many years conducted the Jane POTTS School of Dancing. His second wife, Mary FIELD POTTS, whom he married on August 30, 1941, in New York and a granddaughter, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. COLLINS, also survive.

In addition to his immediate family here, Mr. POTTS is survived by a brother, George, of Fairfield, Ia..

Funeral services are to be held Monday afternoon at 3:30 at the Presbyterian Church and interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s) mentioned.

[Ed. note: It was originally thought that Clyde POTTS was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, IA, but this is not the case. There are several other Evergreen Cemeteries in the country, the closest to Morristown, NJ, being the one in Brooklyn, NY, but their burial lists do not show him either. At this point, Clyde's final resting place is unknown.]
