Death of Col. HAMPSON.

Lieutenant Colonel Jesse A. P. HAMPSON of the Twelfth United States Infantry died at the Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, Friday morning. He had been a sufferer from chronic endocarditis for several years, and in 1890 secured a year's leave of absence from duty in the hope that he might be cured. At the expiration of his furlough he returned to his regiment and had been with it at Ft. Sully, South Dakota, until he went to Chicago for medical treatment, Sept. 20th. Col. HAMPSON was the eldest son of the late Evan C. HAMPSON, who came to this county from Pennsylvania about 1847. The son grew to manhood here and never relinquished his claim on Fairfield as his home. Prior to the war of the rebellion Col. HAMPSON was at school at Pella and there met Miss Augusta SPRAY, to whom he was married after his enlistment in the service of the government, and who survives him. Two children were born to them, both of whom are dead, and their bodies now lie in the cemetery in this city. November 6th, 1861, young HAMPSON enlisted in Company M, Fourth Iowa Cavalry. After a few months' service he received an appointment to the regular army as lieutenant and he retained his connection with that branch of the service until his death. Col. HAPMSON was an excellent man and a brave soldier. His promotions from a lieutenancy came up to him largely for meritorious service. He had many friends among the older people of this city who were shocked to learn of his death. The remains were brought here for interment Sunday and were buried that afternoon with Masonic honors. Rev. G. W. Reinking conducted funeral services at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. STONER, the latter being a sister of the deceased.
