CAPT. B. F. CRAIL DEAD AT AGE OF NEARLY 97. Civil War Veteran, Noted for Valorous Service, Passed Away Yesterday....

Born March 19, 1828, in Beaver County, Pa.. He came from Revolutionary stock, his grandfather having fought for independence and his father in the War of 1812... In 1852 he took a position in the ship yards of Pittsburgh and went from there to Freedom, Pa.. Later he signed on as a carpenter on an Ohio river steamboat, but quit that to come to Fairfield to join his family, which had come to Fairfield four years before. Soon after his arrival here he purchased an ox team and drove to Colorado.

In 1852, while residing in Penn., Capt. CRAIL was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte McCASKEY. Six children -- James, a prominent dry goods merchant of Washington, Iowa; William H., a retired gold miner of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Susan STEELE, Robert M., a traveling salesman of Maryville, Mo., David E. of Los Angeles, Calif., and Frank A. of Burlington, Iowa.

The wife and mother passed away in 1873, and in 1877 Capt. CRAIL married Mrs. Nancy STEELE of this city, who died in 1891. To this marriage were born twin sons, Joseph S. and Charles S., now living in Los Angeles, Calif., where the latter has been honored by being chosen as Judge of Superior Court.

In 1895 Capt. CRAIL was married to his present wife, whose maiden name was Miss Helen RICHARDSON, and to them was born one daughter, Mary Helen, who died in January, 1923.
