Page 3, Column 7DEATH AT WORK.
It is with a sad heart that we record the death of Robert Emery ALEXANDER, a young man born and reared in this city. As child, boy, and man he grew up among us, and we knew his worth. He was born December 29th, 1848, in the house where his parents now reside. In their deep affliction Mr. and Mrs. Wm. K. ALEXANDER have the sympathy of the community over the loss of their well-beloved son. At an early age Emery manifested business ability, and for many years was a popular clerk in the dry goods house of Wells, Stever & Averill. He remained with them until the spring of 1872. He then accepted a position in the Chicago house of Field, Leiter & Co. He remained there a few weeks as salesman, and developing satisfactory clerical ability, was promoted to the position of corresponding clerk. In the spring of 1873 he became a traveling salesman for King Bros. & Co , and spent several monthsin (sic) Wisconsin. In August, 1873, he entered the employ of J. E. Roth & Co., this city, and remained until October 15, 1874. He then formed a partnership with R. M. Tweed in the dry goods business, which was continued until March, 1876, when he purchased the interest of Mr. Tweed, and has carried on the business in his own name since that time.
Last September he went to Chicago to purchase goods, and while there contracted a severe cold which settled in his liver and stomach.-- Dyspepsia also troubled him. He wasted rapidly and at length resolved to go to the mountains in hope of being benefitted. About five weeks ago he went to Colorado Springs. He found a good friend in J. M. Slagle, Jr., who assisted and waited on him. He improved slightly, but last Wednesday commenced to go rapidly down the hill of life. His brother Hugh, at Lake City, was telegraphed for, and arrived at Colorado Springs Saturday night(.) Emery continued to grow worse, and Sunday night breathed his last and quietly passed over the river. Information of his death was telegraphed here Monday. Hugh left the Springs with his brother Emery's remains Monday, arriving in this city this morning. The funeral will take place from the First M. E. Church, to-morrow, Thursday, at 10 o'clock.
Thus passed away another of the bright young men of our acquaintance. His geniality and always pleasant disposition won him friends wherever he appeared. He was full of life and animation, quick at repartee, and a general favorite. He was a young man above reproach, and no harmful word can be said against Emery ALEXANDER, as boy or man, in private life or business relations. Many warm friends will drop sincere tears of regret over the early ending of a young, happy and prosperous career. Life had many attractions for him, but the great Master called and he obeyed the summons.
