WM. B. MURRAY PASSES AWAY. William B. MURRAY, one of the well known residents of Fairfield, passed away yesterday while in Marshalltown and the remains were brought here this morning for interment.
Mr. MURRAY was born in Fayette County, Virginia, Dec. 8, 1835, and came to Jefferson County with his parents in 1837. For some years following 1856 he was a school teacher. In 1861 Mr. M. went to Salt Lake and did teaming from there to Denver. Returning to Fairfield, he enlisted in Co. A, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, going with the regiment to Plattsville, Ark..... In the spring of 1863 he again enlisted, this time as a recruit to the 14th Iowa Infantry, going to Cairo, Ill. He was detached for service as Post Orderly under Gen. N. B. Buford.... He was mustered out in Nov., 1865.
Mr. MURRAY had much to do with the upbuilding of the West, having had charge of provision trains until 1867, after which he served the U.P.R.R. and the S.W.R.R. in the United States and the C.S.R.R. in Canada, on the latter two serving as purchasing agent and handling bridge construction. Married Sept. 22, 1872, Martha BEAUMONT, who survives; also survived by a son, Buford.... Long an officer in the Old Settlers' Association.
