Martha J. McCARTNEY was born in Bourbon Co., Ky., Sept. 18, 1823, and died at her home in Libertyville Aug. 31, 1898. She was the daughter of Noah and Catharine BIVENS. When quite young she removed with her parents to Springfield, Ill., the home of Abe Lincoln. Early in the '40s she came to Iowa and soon afterward went to the Osage Indian reservation in Missouri. There she married Abner HILL, July 1842. Three children were born to this union, viz: John, Caroline and Ebzina. During the month of May, 1852, her husband died, leaving her with the care of three small children.

Shortly afterward she came to Libertyville and, July 14, 1857, she was united in marriage with W. R. McCARTNEY. To this union the following named children were born: W.W.; George, James, Alice and Albert. Sept. 17, 1897, W. R. McCARTNEY passed away and she was left a widow a second time.... Remains laid to rest in the Fell Cemetery.
