Death came Sunday to J. Wilbur DOLE, former state representative from Jefferson county and secretary of the library board for 20 years. Mr. DOLE passed away at 5:30 a.m. at the University hoepital in Iowa City following a long illness (note: in Johnson Co., IA).
Last rites will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Monger funeral home with Rev. James Bean of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Born in Jefferson county, he spent ihs (sic) entire life in this community.He (sic) took an active part in civic affairs, and was recognized as a local authority on botony (sic). He was also known as a leader in the Democratic party in this community.
Mr. DOLE served as a state representative from Jefferson during the 45th general assembly of Iowa in 1933 and 1934. He was author of the resolution which made the Goldfinch the official bird of Iowa.
He was a candidate for the same office in November, 1948, on the Democratic ticket, but was defeated by his Republican opponent. He was nominated on the Democratic ticket during the June primaries last year.
Mr. DOLE served a long and useful life in the community, serving the public in many other offices besides his term of office in the state house. He was secretary of the Fairfield board of education from 1915 to 1921, also served as a member of the park board, and for many years a member of the Evergreen cemetery board.
The former representative served as deputy clerk of the district court in 1915 and 1916, and for the next five years was Fairfield's postmaster. He became a member of the library board in 1929 and had served as its secretary for 20 years before he recently resigned because of his illness.
After leaving the farm six miles northwest of Fairfield where he was born, he attended Parsons college and graduated with the class of 1894. He later taught school, studied law and served as a director of the Fairfield Engine company. He was a faithful attendant at the Presbyterian church.
J. Wilbur DOLE was born February 7, 1869, in Jefferson county, the son of the late Joe R. and Marie E. DOLE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank DOLE; and a sister, Mary Evaline. Mr. DOLE is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The Fairfield public library will be closed all day Wednesday in tribute to J. Wilbur DOLE, former library board member who passed away Sunday at Iowa City. Mr. DOLE had served as secretary of the board for 20 years.
Mr. DOLE's funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at the Monger funeral home.
