Death of Mrs. COWAN
"Republican", Clarkston, Wash.

The community was shocked to learn that early Saturday morning Mrs. Anna E. COWAN, wife of Capt. C. T. COWAN, had departed this life at the family residence in this city. She had been in poor health for several years, but grew worse a few days before her death. Mrs. COWAN's maiden name was POLLOCK. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1840 and was married to Mr. COWAN in 1860. One year later her husband volunteered in the service for his country, leaving her for three long years. At the age of fouteen (sic - fourteen) she united with the Presbyterian church, of which she was a faithful, consistent and zealous member ever since. She was a devoted wife for forty-four years and was the mother of eight children, five sons and three daughters, six of whom survive her, and were present at the funeral. Mrs. COWAN was an exemplary wife, good mother and kindly, cheerful neighbor and friend. Her christian life and character were beyond reproach and all who knew her spoke in the very highest priase of her many virtues. Mr. and Mrs. COWAN have been citizens of Clarkston for about seven years and have made many friends. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. S. Hood conducting the services. He preached a touching sermon from Rev. 14:13. The edifice was crowded to the doors, many were unable to get within the church.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s).

Note: Cornelius T. COWAN, Co. H, 3rd Iowa Cav. Reg.

It is also worth noting that there are four children of Cornelius and Anna in Fell Cemetery here in Jefferson County: Georgeanna (1865-1866), Cornelious T. (1875-1878), Grace (died 1879), and Bessie (born/died Nov. 1879). If Anna was the mother of eight children and six survived her, then there are two unaccounted for. In addition, Cornelius and Anna both died in and are buried in Clarkson, Asotin Co., WA; both are in Vineland Cemetery. Anna has a large monument (which gives her DOB as 1842, not the 1840 noted above) while Cornelius' grave is unmarked. He was born about 1838 and died Feb. 16, 1926.
