Page 3, Column 1TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. David COLEMAN met with a terrible accident on Tues. 17th inst., which has cost him his life. He lived with his son-in-law a mile or two west of Libertyville. Mr. COLEMAN had taken the gun to shoot a hawk that was flying over the house. He had set the gun on the ground when it was fired off by accident, the contents blowing away nearly all of his under jaw.... Mr. COLEMAN was about 60 years of age. He served his country in the 4th Iowa Cavalry, and was honorably discharged.
*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s).
Note: In Fell Cemetery there is a plaque on a boulder honoring servicemen between 1861 and 1917 whose burial places are unknown. One of the names is David COLEMAN, but it's not clear whether this is the same person as in the above obituary. The Civil War Roster for the 4th IA Cav noted the age of a David COLEMAN in Co. M. as 43 years old when he enlisted on November 2, 1861. If this is not the same David COLEMAN then there's a third person locally with the same name.
