Page 8, Column 5C. L. ALLISON, Retired City Fire Chief, Dies
CHARLES L. ALLISON, retired city fire chief and fire inspector, died at 9:15 a.m. today at the Jefferson county hospital where he had been a patient for the past several weeks.
He had been in failing health for the past ten months and seriously ill for the past three weeks.
ALLISON had served the community as a member of the fire department longer than any other person. His service extended over more than a half century. He was a member of the fire department for 45 years, serving as chief for nine years. He had served as city fire inspector for eight years until his health forced him to retire earlier this year.
In June, 1962, ALLISON was presented the Governor's Meritorious Award for Community Service during a ceremony held at Ames. He was nominated for the award by the state deputy fire marshal.
The body was taken to the Raymond funeral home where last rites are pending.
Charles L. ALLISON, 74, was born Feb. 10, 1891, in Wapello county, the son of William G. and Ella CUNNINGHAM ALLISON. He was reared and educated in the Hedrick and Libertyville communities.
On December 23, 1911, he was married to Elizabeth HESTON who survives. He had been a resident of Fairfield for 54 years. A few years ago he was retired as a foreman at the Iowa Malleable Iron company. He joined the city fire department in 1916 before the arrival of the first motorized equipment.
A member of the First Methodist church, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Leon (Eloise) KAUSE, Mrs. Floyd (Maxine) COLE, Mrs. James (Jeanette) DUCKWORTH, and Dick ALLISON, all of Fairfield.
Other survivors include five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Marie HEGG, Elmhurst, Ill.; two brothers, John of Libertyville, and Ray, Kansas City.
ALLISON was preceded in death by one brother and one half-brother.
(I research ALLISON lineage.)
