DEATH OF AN AGED MAN

Died, at Batavia, Iowa, May 28, 1880, Mr. Samuel WHEELER, Sr., in the 96th year of his age.

He was born in Montgomery Co., Maryland. His youth and early manhood were spent at or near Wellsburg, Virginia. For almost forty years he resided near Washington, Guernsey Co., Ohio. In 1856 he came to Iowa, his three sons and four sons-in-law and their families having come west about the same time.

Mr. WHEELER had been favored with a remarkably vigorous physical constitution, and in his younger years had few equals for strength and activity. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and served under Gen. Harrison at Fort Meigs and elsewhere.

He was twice married; his first wife, the mother of his children, dying soon after he came to Batavia. His second wife, Mrs. Nancy TULLIS, who was the widow of a deceased Lutheran minister, died about four years since. Mr. WHEELER had long been a devout member of the Presbyterian church... His numerous descendants are widely scattered throughout the West. Thus our oldest citizen passes away..... J.M.M.
